Carroll, Breeder of Champion Maryfield, dies at 72

Grandview Farm proprietor Mike Carroll, co-breeder of the 2007 champion feminine sprinter maryfield He died on February 22 in Guelph, Ontario.

Carroll owned and operated Grandview Farm close to Belwood, Ontario from 1992 to 2018. Maryfield’s enterprise accomplice, John Harvey Jr. and the pair have been honored because the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Affiliation’s breeder of the 12 months award in 2007.

$50,000 was requested at a race in January 2006. Santa Anita Park By trainer Doug O’Neill for owners Mark Gorman, Nick Mestrandrea and Jim Perry, Maryfield stepped up the following season when Elusive Quality’s 6-year-old won the Distaff Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2). An obituary by the family noted that Carroll grew up with competitive driving, always trying to “do a better job than the next guy.”

“This was evident in his meticulous attitude to managing and maintaining his farm, both inside and out,” the family said. “During his 26 years on the farm, he often traveled to Kentucky to visit friends, attend sales, and check on his horses, but his work ethic didn’t allow him to take many vacations.

A celebration of life will be held at the Center Wellington Museum in Fergus, Ontario on Saturday, June 24th at 1 PM. The family is asking those who plan to attend to book by June 1st by emailing lenbailey58@gmail.com.
